Vaica has announced the commercial availability of SimpleMed+, the latest addition to its medication adherence and telehealth management platform. SimpleMed+ is a medication dispenser for use by patients who take a number of oral medications per day.

Medications are loaded into the dispenser by a simple insertion of a standard pharmacy-prefilled multi-med blister packs, ensuring an error-free loading of the dispenser with a weekly supply of medications and alleviating the need for a nurse or a caregiver to assist or supervise the patient's medication intake process.

SimpleMed+ currently supports standard multi-med blister packs made by MTS, a subsidiary of Omnicell (NASDAQ: OMCL), with support for other brands of multi-med blister packs to follow soon. SimpleMed+ is also a telehealth hub that collects and uploads the patient's vital signs data directly into the patient's cloud-based EHR.

It has an integrated NFC reader for home-care workforce timesheet management, and a QR code reader for the transfer of blister-specific information. SimpleMed+ connects with Vaica's cloud service via its built-in cellular communications device or via Qualcomm's 2net.

"With medication non-adherence accounting for about 40% of all hospital readmissions and with the healthcare reform transformation from pay-per-service to pay-per-outcomes, medication adherence management now becomes a must-have for every care provider - hospital discharge transition care, ACOs, and specialty pharmacies, in particular," said Gil Margalit, CEO of Vaica.

"We are committed to providing the best medication adherence management solution for care providers, that covers all medication modalities and easy to integrate with other care-delivery and patient-management systems, and we believe that SimpleMed+ is an important step in this direction".

"We are excited about SimpleMed+ and see it as a critical component in closing the medication management loop", said Jean Boutin, President and Founder of Synergy Medical of Quebec, Canada, a world-leader in multi-med blister filling automation for pharmacies.

"With recent changes in the healthcare market structure and economics, we are now experiencing a surging demand in the US market for the delivery of medications in adherence-enhanced packaging, such as multi-med blister packs, and for automation and IT to support it. With SimpleMed+, we can now cross the gap from the pharmacy to the patient to provide an integrated and streamlined medication management solution, end-to-end. Medication adherence is only as strong as its weakest link and now, with SimpleMed+, it becomes much stronger."
