Powering medical implants directly from human body

Powering medical implants directly from human body
Researchers from UCLA and the University of Connecticut have designed a new biofriendly energy storage system called a biological supercapacitor, which operates using charged particles, or ions, from fluids in the human body. The device is harmless to the body’s biological systems, and it could lead to longer-lasting cardiac pacemakers and other implantable medical devices.

Wireless power tech energises medical implants inside the body

Wireless power tech energises medical implants inside the body
A collaboration of scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Draper Laboratory, an engineering firm, have been working on a wireless system to power electronic implants placed within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Batteries are currently the only practical option for most implants, but their lifetime is limited and it is difficult to overcome the incompatibility of the mucosal lining with the batteries by encasing them somehow.

35W triple output power supply simplifies system integration

35W triple output power supply simplifies system integration
TDK Corporation announces the introduction of the 35W rated CUT35 power supplies, requiring no minimum loading to maintain tight regulation specifications. In addition, output 1 is electrically isolated from outputs 2 and 3 through the use of a two independent converter topology, enabling the product to also be configured for dual output. This flexibility makes it suitable for use in a wide range of process control, broadcast, test & measurement, and industrial equipment applications.

Miniaturised jet engine could power tiny medical devices

Miniaturised jet engine could power tiny medical devices
Nanorobots and other mini-vehicles might be able to perform important services in medicine one day – for example, by conducting remotely-controlled operations or transporting pharmaceutical agents to a desired location in the body. However, to date it has been hard to steer such micro- and nanoswimmers accurately through biological fluids such as blood, synovial fluid or the inside of the eyeball.
