Wearable five-channel ECG chip monitors foetal heart rate
At FutureSummits, imec and Bloomlife are showcasing a prototype of the wearable five-channel electrocardiogram (ECG) chip to continuously and accurately monitor foetal heart rate and mobility, two important indicators of a baby’s wellbeing. With the development of this chip, a major hurdle has been taken in the creation of a wearable ECG system that can accurately measure the foetal ECG as early as week 20 in a woman’s pregnancy.

Health patch with long battery life to measure vital signs
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2019), in Las Vegas, imec and TNO are presenting the latest version of their health patch. Developed in the framework of the Holst Centre in Eindhoven, the new health patch offers comfort and a long battery life. It can also be manufactured at a fraction of the cost of previous generations, making it a user-friendly, disposable solution for ambulant patient monitoring.

The research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, imec, has released and is making available its high-density neural probe, Neuropixels, to the global neuroscience research community. With almost a thousand electrodes, and 384 recording channels on a single shank, the Neuropixels probe provides an unprecedented resolution for mapping brain activity.

Imec has presented an organ-on-chip platform for pharmacological studies with unprecedented signal quality. It fuses multi-electrode array (MEA)-chip with a microfluidic well plate, developed in collaboration with Micronit Microtechnologies, in which cells can be cultured, providing an environment that mimics human physiology. Capable of performing multiple tests in parallel, the device aims to be a game-changer for the pharmaceutical industry, offering high quality data in the drug development process.

Sweet like stress detection
Global research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, imec, has announced that it has collected the largest multisensor dataset worldwide on stress detection. imec’s Stress in the Work Environment (SWEET) study captured data from more than 1,000 people and is the first large-scale study that used clinical-grade wearables to establish the link between mental stress and physiological symptoms in daily life.

Tiny neural probe records multiple brain regions at the same time
Imec has designed and fabricated a breakthrough neural probe for the parallel recording of hundreds of neural signals. The Neuropixels probe was developed for an international consortium consisting of Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome, with funding of $5.5 million.

Improving epilepsy diagnosis
Epilog, a spin-off from imec and Ghent University, is launching a platform that improves epilepsy diagnosis through an automated service that accurately and efficiently analyses large amounts of EEG-data. The new platform enables doctors to make well-informed patient treatment decisions. Proven in clinical trials and welcomed by the physician community, interest in Epilog has grown internationally, and to-date, the solution is being tested in seven hospitals within Europe.

Time-based ECG readout chip designed for wearables
imec and Holst Centre, an open-innovation initiative set-up by imec and TNO, have presented a 0.6V ECG readout chip in 40nm technology based on time-domain circuit techniques. The chip maintains consistent beat detection capabilities, even under movement (~40mVpp), paving the way to a low cost, low power multi-sensor SoC solution for wearable medical applications.
