Brain injury to be diagnosed with a single drop of blood

Every year in Europe, three million people are admitted into hospitals for suspected mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) cases. Yet 90% of these patients will be able to return home safely, as no trauma has been detected. Today, the only reliable diagnosis is the CT Scan, which is only available in some hospitals and, in addition to being expensive, exposes patients to radiations.

Technique tests safety of nanoparticles on body

Swiss researchers at the University of Geneva and University of Fribourg have developed a rapid technique for evaluating the safety of nanoparticles for the human body. Currently, this process often takes months, which is much too long when new nanoparticles are being developed at a rapid rate. Moreover, it can take many months to confirm that a new nanoparticle is doing something that’s desired, but which is then discarded after a side eff...

Superconductivity seen in another light

Superconducting materials have the characteristic of letting an electric current flow without resistance. The study of superconductors with a high critical temperature discovered in the 1980s remains a very attractive research subject for physicists. Indeed, many experimental observations still lack an adequate theoretical description. Researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) in and the TUM in Germany have lifted the veil on the electron...
